"The recognition and incorporation of kaupapa Māori values within mainstream culture is an ongoing process and a challenge for New Zealand society. Iwi and hāpu have been at the forefront of such changes across different areas but particularly environmental and natural resource management.
This change has been supported by legislative recognition of the role of Iwi Māori and Māori values as well as the settlement of historic Treaty of Waitangi claims. Transferring this recognition and integration of values into economic management and commercial development, however, is still to be realised – despite treaty settlements enabling Iwi to grow their commercial profiles."
